Charity Engine is what we call a "Crowdsourced Cloud Service":
- How does it work? Download our app, and your PC lends its spare processing power to the network whenever you're not using it.
- What do we do with it? Together, our PCs form a powerful grid that rivals major cloud services like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud – but at a fraction of the cost.
- Where does the money go? We share the profits with global charities such as Oxfam and Care – and a prize draw (*every CPU hour donated earns a draw entry). And perhaps the biggest benefit: huge amounts of compute capacity are donated to support scientific and medical research.
It’s a win-win-win-win: affordable computing for customers, money for charity, prizes for volunteers – and billions of hours of computing donated to research that matters.
Green Computing
Charity Engine is one of the greenest computing resources on the planet. We only use spare processing power from PCs that are already switched on for other work.
But even more impactfully: 75% of a computer's lifetime energy cost comes from manufacturing, not running it.
That means the greenest computing service is the one uses servers built for other purposes.
