I have CE running on a Linux machine with Virtual Box installed thereon. A new BOINC notice appeared yesterday saying: "Some projects require Docker; we recommend that you install it."
Is that something that I should be doing to accomodate the types of project that CE might allocate?
Are you running the Charity Engine app, or a BOINC app?
Are you running CE (or BOINC) inside a VM; or do you mean VirtualBox is also installed on your device (*perhaps installed as part of the CE installer)?
-- In any event, you do not need to install Docker to support any CE compute jobs: Docker is available inside VMs which CE deploys, if/as needed. It's all automatic :)
1. I am running the boinc-8.2.9 (deb) package on Ubuntu-26.04.1. It runs on bare-metal, not as a snap, and has been configured to use the CE Account Manager.
2. I also have the virtualbox-7.2.6 package and its associated extension package installed on bare-metal, and this is used for multi-processor LHC jobs.
Oh, and I also have a small OpenVZ server instance running boinc-7.20.2-1.e18 (rpm) on Centos-8.5.2111 (also configured to use the CE Account Manager).
Sounds cool. As noted, you do not need to install Docker to support any CE compute jobs: Docker is available inside the VMs which we deploy, if/as needed. It's all automatic. (*But: you may need Docker installed on your system for some newer LHC jobs -- I'm not 100% sure about that.)
