Hey there,

I've just downloaded charity engine for my mac (running OSX 10.6). It attempts to connect to projects but just gives out an error message telling me to check the event log and that "Boinc can't access internet- check network connection or proxy configuration".

Any ideas what might be the problem? All other internet things seem to work fine. I have no firewall on, just sophos anti-virus. No clue if I have any proxies running.

Event log says this:

Did your computer received work eventually ?

It would be nice to know how you are accessing the Internet, sometimes a proxy or a VPN dropping connection could be causing these issues. Sometimes, it can be that the website drops for a short time, thus you are getting a message, but there is nothing you can do.

You did a great job by copying the log file, but where is the error message about accessing the Internet ? It must have been lower in the log file and you didn't copy it.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for replying. And nope, still doesn't work and nope, that was the whole event log. No VPN being used and no proxies detected by two websites I found from a google search (http://whatismyipaddress.com/proxy-check and http://www.lagado.com/proxy-test).

Here's the event log I got this time round- it's a little different:

Hi Pascoe,

First, make sure in 'security & privacy' that BOINC is allowed to connect.

If it is, then there is something else it could be. (The tech guys are off for the weekend, so if it's not this then we'll have to wait for them):

You basically need to add the line "nameserver 8.8.8.8" to the file "/etc/resolv.conf"

On the last version of OSX (so I hope this is still the route!), it's Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to...

 /etc/

Find resolv.conf in the window that opens & drag it to Text Edit's icon. Will look something like this:

search opendns.com

nameserver 208.67.222.222

nameserver 208.67.220.220

nameserver 4.1.1.1

nameserver 4.1.1.2

nameserver 10.0.1.1

Then just add "nameserver 8.8.8.8" to the list and save it.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Mark

Hey Mark, thanks! That nameserver 8.8.8.8 thing worked. For anyone wondering how to edit the resolve.conf file, you have to copy it out of the etc folder, edit it, then copy it back in.

Hey, even a blind squirrel finds the odd acorn... ;)
